For years, Grand Theft Auto fans have imagined what it’d be like if Vice City received a HD remake — after all, Vice City probably features the best environment, character and mood of any Grand Theft Auto game, but Grand Theft Auto IV’s graphics and physics are the best of any game in the series.
Using OpenIV — an accessible version of Grand Theft Auto IV’s RAGE (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) — this project by Taltigolt started in 2011 and currently nearing a beta release is a mod for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV and fulfills that years-long need for an up-to-date version of Grand Theft Auto. Even in its early stages, I was left with a beaming smile on my face seeing the Vice City world crossed with GTA IV’s — even if its textures are currently slightly lacking and the video features some otherwise boring driving around. Give me some Vice City ragdoll physics, darn it!
Ultimately, if done flawlessly (but don’t expect it to be done flawlessly) this mod could become one of my favourite installments of the franchise, official or not — even with Grand Theft Auto V just around the corner. Keep tabs on this mod’s development here and check below for the most up-to-date video of the project.
