Roguelikes and rhythm games are as different as could possibly be, which is why it comes to no surprise that there hasn’t really been a game that’s attempted to combine the two genres. That is until Crypt of the NecroDancer anyway — an upcoming hardcore rhythm-based roguelike game from a small team under the name Brace Yourself Games, including coder Ryan Clark and artist Ted Martens.
Featuring some sexy pixel artwork and lovely dance soundtrack, you play as someone who’s fallen into a ‘dungeon of dance’ and must slay the dungeon’s NecroDancer. To do so, every step you take and swing of your sword must be made to the beat of the track – think iOS’ Beat Sneak Bandit in a rougelike setting. It’s simple yet entertaining gameplay that works and is made even better by the ability to use a keyboard, gamepad or even DDR dance pad to control the game. You can also use your own music in the game if you’d prefer to do so.
Featuring procedurally generated dungeons each playthrough, the game is intended to be somewhat ‘hardcore’, aiming to pose a difficult yet fair challenge to fans of the genres. Set for release this year, you can track the development of the game via Brace Yourself Games’ forums. Looking forward to this one big time.
